Around 100 秘密研究所 students and employees attended the first University-wide field trip to the Chicago History Museum on Friday, March 27 to view the 鈥Aqu铆 en Chicago鈥 (Here in Chicago) exhibit.

秘密研究所n is the longest-standing four-year public Hispanic-Serving Institution in the Midwest. The exhibit celebrates Chicago鈥檚 Latin茅 communities, which represent nearly one third of the city鈥檚 population. The trip was spearheaded by the University鈥檚 Council on the Status of Latin茅s 鈥 led by Professor Isaura Pulido, Ph.D., and Director of Proyecto Pa鈥橪ante Angelica Rivera, Ph.D. It was sponsored by President Katrina E. Bell-Jordan, Ph.D.; Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost R. Shayne Cofer, Ph.D.; Executive Director of Marketing and Communications Chris Childers; Vice President of Institutional Advancement Liesl Downey; Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students Terry C. Mena, Ph.D.; Vice President of Institutional Advancement Beni Ortiz; Professor and Chair of the Department of World Languages and Cultures Denise Cloonan Cortez de Anderson; Director of the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs DeWitt Scott, Ed.D.; and the Pedroso Center鈥檚 Associate Director for Latinx Student Engagement Danny Cortez. It was the first time the University had planned a field trip of this magnitude, with participants attending from the University鈥檚 three Chicago locations: Main Campus, El Centro and the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies.

鈥淏eing able to be on site as a community to experience something together is huge,鈥 said President Bell-Jordan. 鈥淲e鈥檒l all experience it together, remember it together, be able to articulate it together and celebrate it together, and maybe move forward our University in some ways because of this.鈥 She continued, 鈥淭his activity is bringing us together to engage with histories and stories, particularly of Chicago鈥檚 Latin茅 communities. We are gathered in a space that honors the lived experience, the resilience and creativity, and the deep roots of those that have shaped our city, and in many ways our University.鈥
Morning sessions included an introduction to the Chicago History Museum from its Director of Education Erica Griffith-Fabicon, an overview of Latin茅 populations in Chicago presented by University of 秘密研究所s Chicago Professor of History Lilia Fern谩ndez, Ph.D., and a presentation on how the 鈥淎qu铆 en Chicago鈥 exhibit came into existence by Curator of Civic Engagement and Social Justice for the Chicago History Museum Elena Gonzales.

鈥淚 focus on people who arrived during and after World War II, primarily Mexicans and Puerto Ricans and I was inspired by my own family because this is when they came to the city,鈥 said Fern谩ndez, who is also the author of 鈥Brown in the Windy City: Mexicans and Puerto Ricans in Chicago鈥 (University of Chicago Press, 2012). 鈥淢y grandparents and great grandparents came here in the 1950s and I remember hearing stories of them growing up, what it was like living on Taylor Street, moving to 18th Street. I was curious about learning more. So, for you students, I really want to encourage you to really think about doing research.鈥

鈥淎qu铆 en Chicago鈥 is truly a student-driven project. In 2019, students from Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy visited the Chicago History Museum on a class trip and pointed out the lack of Latin茅 representation they saw within the museum and protested for a change. The museum listened and is working to come to terms with its shortcomings.

鈥淥ne thing that I want to make very clear is that we need to be learning about how we are one Chicago,鈥 Gonzales said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 not a separate, other, different Latin茅 Chicago population that鈥檚 elsewhere, that鈥檚 happening to other people. The Chicago that we all experience every day is Latin茅.鈥

After a break for lunch, all participants had the opportunity to explore not only the 鈥淎qu铆 en Chicago鈥 exhibit, but other parts of the museum as well. The afternoon concluded with a reflection session in which students and employees were able to share what they learned.

"One thing that kind of stuck out to me today was the Black community and Latin community have similar back stories of being mistreated in America," said Dalina Peguse, who is in her second year of undergraduate studies at 秘密研究所.

Faculty and administrators shared insights on how they want to think practically about how they can incorporate more multiculturalism, especially experiences of Latin茅 communities, into their classrooms.

鈥淨uite often I see titles of books like 鈥楽teel Barrio,鈥 鈥楳aking Mexican Chicago鈥 and 鈥楤rown in the Windy City,鈥 and I say to myself, 鈥極f course we have that book in the library,鈥欌 said Dean of NEIU Libraries Steven Harris. 鈥淪ometimes, I find that鈥檚 not always the case. So, I feel like we need to think about this more intentionally in the library to assure that we鈥檙e addressing those cultural elements that are important in Chicago.鈥

Melanny Buitron earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in 2019 from 秘密研究所n in General Business Administration and is currently enrolled in the M.A. Educational Leadership, Higher Education program. She appreciated seeing the University鈥檚 administration, faculty and staff show up to the exhibit and learn alongside students. She said the trip gave her a sense of belonging and boosted her confidence. Her family immigrated to the U.S. from Ecuador when she was a year old.

鈥淓xperiencing Aqu铆 en Chicago helped me embrace all parts of my identity,鈥 Buitron said. 鈥淚鈥檓 proud to be a first-generation Ecuadorian Chicagoan, working in higher education. As I moved through the exhibit, seeing stories that reflected so many Latin茅 experiences in Chicago, the moment that stayed with me most was the display of Ecuadorian fashion from Kichwa communities. I had never seen Ecuador represented like that before and it meant everything to me. This experience reminded me that our stories deserve to take up space, to be celebrated, and to be honored, because they are a vital part of Chicago鈥檚 story too."

秘密研究所 is part of the Chicago History Museum University Partner Groups program. The program allows current 秘密研究所n students and employees with a valid University ID to gain free admission to the museum, access to educational services in the Abakanowicz Research Center, have reduced pricing for private group tours and lectures (based on staff availability), attend programs, and receive a 10% member discount at the North & Clark Caf茅, located inside the museum. Additionally, 秘密研究所n offers a course in Museum Studies (HIST-359), which is open to students in all majors.

鈥淩epresentation and diversity within museums matters,鈥 Dr. Pulido said. 鈥淭hey create opportunities for stories from underrepresented communities that have been previously dismissed or overlooked to come to the forefront. I think it鈥檚 important for our students to know their voices matter in this field.鈥

The ideal candidates will share the university鈥檚 commitment to educating a racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse student population and will collaborate with others in the program, department, college and university to deliver high quality instruction and programs. Knowledge of 秘密研究所s Board of Nursing regulatory requirements and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation standards, procedures, and guidelines is essential.

About 秘密研究所

Founded in 1867, 秘密研究所 (NEIU) enrolls about 5,700 students and is regarded as one of the most diverse public comprehensive universities in the Midwest. The Main Campus is located on 67 acres in a residential area on the Northwest Side of Chicago and two additional campuses are located in the Avondale and Bronzeville neighborhoods of Chicago. Since 1997, the U.S. Department of Education has designated NEIU a Hispanic-Serving Institution. NEIU offers more than 40 undergraduate degree and certificate programs and more than 50 graduate degree, certificate, licensure and endorsement programs. Read more about 秘密研究所 at www.neiu.edu.

The Goodwin College of Education (GCOE) enrolls approximately 1,200 students in nine undergraduate and twenty-one graduate degree programs spanning the areas of counselor education, educational leadership, teacher education, and community and health studies. With roots that trace back to the first teacher education institution in Chicago, the college today is one of the largest producers of diverse educators in 秘密研究所s and the Chicago area. Educator licensure programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and counseling programs have specialized accreditation through the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Read more about the college at www.neiu.edu/gcoe.

Department Background

NEIU is excited to launch the inaugural cohort of its Master of Science in Nursing-Entry to Practice program in Fall 2027 at its El Centro (Avondale) location. The MSNEP program seeks to improve Chicago鈥檚 healthcare ecosystem by training a diverse workforce to meet the ongoing and emerging demands of the region. NEIU鈥檚 MSNEP program is dedicated to community-based practice and enhancing the economic mobility of students. This unique program is a 2.5-year, 72 credit-hour degree designed for the adult learner with bachelor degrees in any field outside of nursing. NEIU鈥檚 MSNEP program will produce nurse leaders who are well-equipped to care for all persons in culturally responsive ways.

Responsibilities

Prior to the launch of the inaugural cohort in Fall 2027, tenure-track faculty will provide critical review of curriculum, programming, student supports, accreditation standards, and related documents. In the first year of the program and thereafter, faculty will transition to teaching 18鈥21 credit hours per academic year. Faculty will teach didactic and clinical graduate nursing courses in pre-licensure MSN programs, with an emphasis on Medical-Surgical and Mental Health nursing. All faculty will apply CCNE accreditation standards, as well as use evidence-based strategies and technology-enhanced learning platforms to build culturally competent and inclusive learning environments. Effective instruction at NEIU requires modeling critical and reflective thinking; fostering the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective development of learners; providing timely, constructive, and thoughtful feedback; and using course evaluation data to continuously improve instruction. A spirit of inquiry is expected in all teaching, learning, and evaluation methods.

Scholarly research and service to the department, college, university, and greater community are required in addition to teaching. Current research findings and scholarly works should inform educational practice and ongoing contributions to the field. Service should advance both programmatic and professional goals and the university鈥檚 mission and commitments. Alignment with AACN Essentials and CCNE standards is expected in all programmatic revision work, and clinical certification and licensure in nursing must be maintained. Faculty are expected to demonstrate professional and ethical conduct in all interactions; likewise, they are expected to support student success through academic advising and face-to-face office hours and department meetings. An active, on-campus presence at the El Centro location is required.
